Curricular Provision
A very broad curriculum is followed by all pupils. It is
designed to provide a breadth of experience and an academic
depth as well as being relevant to the world of work.
Key Stage 3
Pupils in Years 8-10 follow courses in the following subjects:
Art & Design, English, French, Geography, German (From Year
9), History, Home Economics, Information Technology,
Mathematics, Music, Personal & Social Education including
Careers advice, Physical Education,Religious Studies, Science
and Technology & Design.
All Year 10 pupils are entered for the Certificate of
Competence in Information Technology and most achieve
the top levels.
Key Stage 4
Pupils in Years 11-12 are prepared for GCSE examinations normally
at the highest levels in 9 to 11 subjects. They will take
various combinations of subjects from the following list of the
20 currently being offered.
Additional Mathematics, Art & Design, Biology, Chemistry, Double Award
Science, English Language, English Literature, French, Geography, German,
History, Home Economics, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Physical Education,
Religious Studies, Technology & Design and Information
Technology. A new vocational GCSE 'Learning for Life and Work'
is also offered
Key Stage 5
In Years 13 and 14 pupils will choose subjects from a range of
GCE AS levels, A2 levels, Advanced VCEs and Key Skills. The
following is a list of subjects currently being offered:
Art & Design, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry,
Information & Communications Technology, English
Literature, French, Geography, German, History, Home Economics,
Mathematics, Music, Physics, Religious Studies and Technology &
Design.
With guidance of careers staff, pupils entering Year 13 will be
encouraged to create a study portfolio from a various range of
curriculum opportunities which, while retaining the present academic
rigour, will also provide a breadth of experience that will enhance
their options for entry to further and higher education.
An RSA in Computer Literacy and Information
Technology is available to all Year 13
pupils. Other examinations taken are the University of
Oxford Young Enterprise Europe Examination, a
Sentinus Engineering qualification in City & Guilds
level 6 and European Studies Programme. The
examination boards are: Edexcel, CCEA and AQA.
International Links
Pupils and staff participate in cross-curricular multimedia communication with
partner schools in France, Germany, Norway and the Republic of
Ireland. The European Studies team was selected to take part in a
forum within the European Youth Parliament and won through to the
Northern Ireland final. These activities broaden the curriculum and
experience of pupils, not just about other cultures and economic
systems but also provide opportunities for developing skills in
Information and Computer Technology. There is a bi-annual visit by
our pupils to France where they stay with French families and have
opportunity for tuition in a French school as well as cultural and
leisure activities.
