Sport at Strabane Grammar School

At Strabane Grammar School, there are many sports played at both a competitive and non-competitive level. The following sports are played, with those highlighed being played at a competitive level. This requires extra training and commitment after school.

Rugby

Competitive rugby starts in Year 9 with friendly matches against other schools. Other events are shown below, where the 1st and 2nd XV teams are made up of pupils from the senior classes, ie, Years 12, 13 and 14 and the Medallion team is made up of Years 11 and 12.

The other school teams that participate in rugby are
  • Under 13s – Year 9
  • Under 14s – Year 10
  • Under 18s – Senior (Years 13 and 14)

Rugby teams practice after school between 3:40pm and 4:30pm for two terms a year.

Monday    1st XV/Medallion, coached by Mr. Hampton
Tuesday    Under 13/Under 14 coached by an outside coach
Wednesday    1st XV/Medallion, coached by Mr. Hampton

Football

Only the boys take part in competitive events in football as part of the Northern Ireland Schools F.A.  These are:

  • Under 18s Youth Cup – Senior
  • Under 15s Senior Cup – Year 11
  • Under 12s Minor Cup – Year 8

Outside coaching is offered to both boys and girls after school for two terms a year at the following times.

Boys:
Monday – Years 8 and 9
Wednesday – Years 12 to 14

Girls:
Tuesday – Years 8 and 9


 

Cricket

The boys compete in several events at differing levels, starting with Year 9.  These are:

  • 1st XI - Duke of Abercorn and Schools' Cup – Senior
  • Under 16s XI - League and Cup – Year 12
  • Under 15s XI - Cup – Year 11
  • Under 14s XI - Cup – Year 10
  • Under 13s XI - Moyallen Shield – Year 9

Over the past few years, the Cricket teams have had spectacular success with two of our players playing for the Ulster Schools' and Ireland sides, with one of them (Dwayne McGerrigle) being captain of the Ireland School's team.  Over the past two seasons, the schools' sides have won no less than 7 trophies. Examples of cricketing success in 1997 include:

  • Cricket - Under 12's won Centenary Cup
  • Cricket - Under 13's won the Ulster Cup and Moyallen Shield for 2nd successive year
  • Cricket - Under 15's reached the School Cup Final for 2nd successive year

Athletics

Both girls and boys from Years 9 and 10 take part in the Ulster Athletics District Championships.


 

Hockey

Girls start playing competitive hockey from Year 9 onwards, in the Under 13s XI, with friendly matches against other schools.
The competitive events from Year 10 onwards are as follows:

  • 1st XI McDowell Cup, Omagh District League – Senior
  • 2nd XI Omagh District League – Senior
  • Under 16s XI North West and Strabane League, Omagh District League – Years 11 and 12
  • Under 14s XI North West and Strabane League, Schools Junior Cup – Year 10

Tennis

Only the girls play tennis at a competitive level starting from Year 9.

Strabane Grammar School competes in the Ulster School' Tennis Championship with the following teams.

  • one Senior girls team (Years 13 and 14)
  • one Intermediate girls team (Years 11 and 12)
  • one Junior girls team (Years 9 and 10)

Netball

Although netball is not played at a competitive level at Strabane Grammar School, practice is available on Thursdays from 12:55pm to 1:55pm (lunch time), taught by a student PE teacher.
